Description

Tart Granny Smith apples dipped in a hard-crack red candy shell and finished with edible candy eyes for a whimsical, monster-themed treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium Granny Smith apples
  • 6 wooden skewers
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon red food coloring
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 12 edible candy eyes

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry apples thoroughly, remove stems, and insert wooden skewers into the top of each apple.
  2. Combine sugar, corn syrup, water, and red food coloring in a medium saucepan.
  3. Heat the mixture over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Once boiling, stop stirring.
  4. Use a candy thermometer to heat the syrup to 300°F (hard-crack stage).
  5. Stir in the butter just before removing from heat.
  6. Tilt the pan and dip each apple, swirling it to get a thin, even coating of candy.
  7. Place the coated apples on parchment paper.
  8. Immediately press two candy eyes into the top of each apple while the sugar is still tacky.
  9. Allow the apples to cool and harden completely for 30 minutes before serving.
