Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup dried currants or raisins
  • 1/4 cup softened butter
  • 1/2 cup flour + water (as needed)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit until frothy (about 5 minutes).
  2. In another bowl, combine flour, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Gradually add to the yeast mixture until combined.
  3. Knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth. Incorporate butter and dried fruits; knead until well mixed.
  4. Place in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about an hour until doubled.
  5. Punch down the dough and divide into equal pieces. Shape into buns and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Cover shaped buns loosely with plastic wrap; let rise again for about 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Create a paste of flour and water for crosses on top of each bun.
  8. Bake for approximately 20 minutes until golden brown; cool slightly before serving.
